A weekend with... A Range Rover Evoque

We spent the weekend with this Range Rover Evoque P300 MHEV R-DYNAMIC HSE, this small but luxurious SUV certainly packs a performance punch.

How good looking is this Range Rover Evoque P300 MHEV R-DYNAMIC HSE, this small but luxurious SUV certainly packs a performance punch too.

Stylish

The Range Rover Evoque is a very stylish vehicle indeed and driving around Riccarton on some weekend errands this SUV certainly turned heads. A lot of design effort from Land Rover was put into its sleek looks to enhance the Evoque’s visual appeal, to the point where the author, new to the Range Rover family of cars, was mistaking the Evoque for it's bigger sister, the Velar, in his initial instatgram posts hashtags! Like the Velar, the new Evoque benefits from simplified body lines, an absence of excess body trim, flush-mounted windows and very cool retracting door handles. The lean LED headlamps and lean blacked-out grill is echoed to the rear with its slender LED lamps, dark pillars and glass giving a well balanced, sleek and sophisticated look.

Interior

Keeping on the stylish theme the Evoque's interior is on another level. What immediatly strikes you is how clean and uncluttered everything is and the attention to detail is second to none, this model even has the Union Jack pattern perforated into the luxurious leather seats. The full length panoramic roof fills the cabin with a lovely ambiant light, which filtered out the harsh Canterbury sun perfectly.

Dash it all

The Evoque’s virtual instrument panel is very easy to read, as is the dash mounted InControl Pro infotainment screen which provides navigation as well as controls for various accessories and air conditioning.
The steering wheel offers secondary thumb controls for more vital functions, and there is a pair of shift paddles handy should the driver feel a bit sporty and utilise the Dynamic driving setting in sport mode.
Everything feels very ergonomic and is a very well thought out control room. The seating position, should you choose is high and commanding, placing you at eye level with the biggest and many 4WD's plying our Christchurch roads.Evoque's Quality.

Performance

Under the bonnet lives a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder that produces 296-horsepower and a very healthy 295 foot-pounds of torque. Interestingly the engine linked to the R-Design designation in this model benefits from additional technology in the form of a mild hybrid system. Known as the MHEV system, this unique powertrain gathers energy during periods of deceleration and stores it in a 48-volt battery for future use such as during acceleration. As a result, acceleration in the R-Dynamic model is rather quick, with manufacturer claims to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds. We of course didn't test this, but certainly feels fast off the green light.

Peppy 4 pot turbo

A pleasure

Spending the weekend with this Range Rover was an absolute pleasure. A peppy engine, a supremley comfortable interior akin to some of the bigger luxurious Range Rovers we get in stock here at Archibalds. This Evoque is loaded with features, too many to list here, but with an easy to use infotainment system and power tailgate with room for the kids (or fur kids) in the back. A city trail blazer indeed.

Rear Seat Comfort!
